History of Math Teaching
Yesterday I received this e-mail below from a relative. I thought it was funny but somewhat true; however, my 10-year-old boy (4th grade) is already plowing through algebra homework every night, so maybe things have changed a bit with the "no child left behind" standards.
If you don't know it already, our teachers are now teaching the standardized end-of-year test material to get the kids past the exam. They feel pressured to do it for two reasons; first, they want to get the kids past the test and rightfully into the next grade. Second, they feel that they must get the children through the exams to meet a false evaluation criteria, of their own teaching abilities, one which is becoming a defacto standard - falsely gauging their teaching abilities.
In talking with my son's teachers, they express that they unwillingly forgo teaching other things they considered previously important and concentrate moreso on test knowledge. So this has its good points and bad points.
In any case, I personally know that I didn't see any algebra until 7th or 8th grade and I was surprised to see my boy solving for "X" in the 4th grade. Luckily math is his strongest academic subject so he enjoys it. Is there some truth in this e-mail below?

The History of Math Teaching
Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.
Why do I tell you this?
Please read more about the "history of teaching math":
Teaching Math In 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?
Teaching Math In 1960: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?
Teaching Math In 1970: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?
Teaching Math In 1980: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment:
Underline the number 20.
Teaching Math In 1990: By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living?
Teaching Math In 2000: Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees? There are no wrong answers.
Teaching Math In 2005: El hachero vende un camion carga por $100. La cuesta de production es.............
And we wonder why jobs requiring intelligence are being outsourced??

"Splosh Balls"
Mmmmmmmm! Yummy! Huh? - I know this is “Bad” :o) but the other night I was watching HBO (one of their sexier shows) and it had a 15 minute segment dedicated to “Sploshing.” If you go to look this term up on the Internet, the word “Splosh” actually has a lot of meaning which is dangerous because it can mean anything from a “sexual fetish with foods” to a Childs play toy or splashing activity. But in the contact of the HBO Segment, to "Splosh" definitely had the meaning of sexual fetish and food play. Their coverage during this segment revealed that there’s a growing interest, particularly in Great Brittan, with play and fun sexy groups gathering to bask in food and do the loving thing. To add this, the participants involved in HBO’s special explained that their gatherings are sometimes called “Splosh Balls” which I thought sort of funny. They had everything going on from coating each other with chocolate sauce or honey to sitting people down on creamy cakes and then munching on them. Ok, where I didn’t really see it at overly erotic it did look like a blast and kind of sexy! So count me into the next “Splosh Ball” with an invite! :) hb

Spazzing-Out on the Net! #2 - "ChemTrails"
I stumbled on these sites by accident and snickered once I read the contents of them. Are these people rich, or what? Maybe a little cracked? I know sometimes they dump fuel from aircraft for various reasons (like not wanting to crash with it on-board) but do they actually think that the U.S. Government is spraying Canadian airspace, Afghanistan and Europe with “secret” biological or organic chemicals? They join my "club-o-nuts" - Spazzing out on the Internet.
I noticed that the Canadian “Green Party” endorses one of these pages. OK, I’m all for the environment too. Americans in particular are no guardians of the environment but this is a little silly.
Anyway, here are some sites (No endorsement intended!) and their ridiculous “phobotic” contents. All this seems to have started back in the Red Barron’s days. Thanks Canadian ChemTrails for the cool picture. hb

New to Me and Maybe You!
This is for my sweetie, because she was interested to see what I recognize as new and different and maybe a little weird when I returned to the States: Miss Jingle’s, you’ll be glad to know, :-) that they now have “Cherry-Vanilla DrPepper (as if DP's flavor was ummmmm... missing something?) Huh? Go figure! AND this new “truly American” marketing campaign to sell everything “low carb” to every ailing, probably plump and overstuffed American has laughingly permitted me run across Russell Stover, “LOW CARB” chocolate samplers. (For those people who’s health is considered important while their stuffing their faces full of chocolate.) What a laugh! OoooK, let’s get real! hb

Was That......Ummmm..... A Compliment? ;-)
Yesterday I stopped into one of the local liquor stores to buy a bottle of Merlot wine. My favorite. OMG! Sticker shock! They want $10.50 for my $5 bottle of wine in Germany.
I was happy that they actually carded me! - Damn! - I'm 43!
This woman working the cash register caught me off guard. She asked me, "Can I see some I.D.?" and I laughed as I pulled out my Texas driver’s license. I honestly didn't even know if they had a birth date on their license, have never used it for a "proof of age" and lord I hadn't been carded in years.
Anyway! I laughed and told her that I was an old fart and she (being mid 50's) told me, "Naw ya ain't, you a young thang. I'd throw ya down and leave ya in the dirt!"
Ummmm? Was that a Oklahoma compliment? :) LOL! What a trip! hb

Woooh! To the Wolpertinger!
Thanks to Armin, at the Ministry of Propaganda for identifying this creature as a "bagged" German "Wolpertinger." Anna and I ran into this creature in Rothenburg last weekend. At first I suspected that it may of been the "EuroCuz" to the infamous Jackalope or illusive Snipe, and I find through Armin, I'm absolutely right! According the history of the Wolpertinger, noted at The Great Germanic Adventure they are quite common and in "numbers of thousands!"
I guess MY Wolpertinger's from Bavaria as I found one of his relatives on-line, ONLY born with Duck Feet, instead of Chicken Feet. SO! Thus I leave you with a few other Wolpertinger's captured or shot on Cam and posted on various sights around the net. You'll find that a mounted Wolpertinger will cost ya about 110 Euro. Rather NOT!
So much has been blogged about it, so let me leave the Blogsphere a smile :-D (because I think it hilarious) about the EGG on Dan Rather face regarding his 60 Minutes story about President Bush's military service. Ha!
"Rather," nice way to flush credibility of sort of cool investigative reporting show down the toilet. Could it be? over-zealous liberal reporting thirst got the better of you? "YOU" are truly a legend in your own mind! How rich! Rather NOT watch you!

Uniform Check!
From my friend "Dale" at Robins AFB, GA yesterday ;)
You know! When your in the military your taught to make sure that your uniform is up-tight! And the culture is such that you will be either harped-on, pestered or ostracized if your not up-to-snuff and presenting a proper military image. When you see something like this, it may not mean much to you, but if your "in the know" and lived in the culture you realize that his, the "Lieutenant Colonel's," friends and comrades in arms probably absolutely busted his chops for wearing his right shoulder board epaulette upside-down on national T.V. LOL!!! Tisk Tisk Colonel :-D how priceless!
Thanks Daleboy! Classic!

Kinder, Gentler, Morel Politicalluy Correct Little League Baseball???
Give me a break! Do you know that their not allowing the kids these days to chatter in the field during their baseball games. Something about it being "pour sports(people) can't say men because there's a girl on the team. No long can the team chat "No Batter, No batter, No Batter, Swing!" because they may hurt the feelings of the less talented or meager minder children. Not much else they can say either. It's no wonder they’re out there picking dandelions and not watching the game. No rallying cries anymore. It's ridiculous, no wonder my kid is bored at the games!!

Funny Mony
Funny Mony
It seems to me that there's something really stupid in all of this:
My little boy goes to this place called "The Kid Zone" which is an indoor child's play land that he has fun at; plays video games, romps in the ball pit, eat's pizza and generally rages in a semi-controlled environment.
Anyway, the electronic games give out tickets that are redeemable for small prizes. So he come back to our table after shopping his tickets away and gives me a stack of money. Not any money, photocopied miniature U.S. currency in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and $100 denominations (all with "MADE IN CHINA" stamped on them!)
Just seems stupid and silly to me (LOL) that a U.S. Military Organization is buying foto copies of U.S. currency from company in "CHINA" as prized for it's dependent kids!
Smile!

Rent-@-Loc
Rent-@-Loc
This made me laugh :-D
When I stepped off of the train the other day at the Kaiserslautern, Ge. train station, there was a blue railroad locomotive parked in the tracks with a big commercial logo on it's side that said "RENT - A - LOC!"
Of all things, I did knot know that you could go and rent a locomotive. Seems a little silly from a laymen's point of view, but I'm sure that it has demand for the companies with siding along the German rail lines.
Do you need a drivers license :) It may be cheaper for me to Rent-a-Loc then it cost me for my 305 Euro a month ICE train pass.
Jus kiddin of course :-P

Rodham Humor
Quite frankly! I think that the woman had a valid point.
I too thought that all gas station owners wore turbans, until I move out of Jersey. So I'll just smile with amusement, as I know that this is not true, and enjoy seeing her squirm after this ill-fated attempt at stereotyping humor.

Food Thoughts
Food Thoughts
A while ago my mother sent William and I an Angel Food Cake box mix and Chocolate Icing to make a cake for a Holiday, I don't remember which, but I ended up taking the cake mix over Anna's house and just whipped it all together the other night.
Just had to laugh at the instructions. In Step 1, it stated, "Mix together ingredients using a CLEAN BOWL AND UTENSILS.
Ummm. OK!
I mentioned to Anna that I loved that they added that little caveat to successfully make the cake. It reminded me of the KRAFT sliced Swiss cheese package that I had at work a few months back.
According to Kraft: The packages was boldly labeled: "New! 9 Ounces! A 1/3 more then a 6 ounce package!"
Gee! Brilliant!!!

Quiet Please! I'm eating!!!
Quiet Please!
Stop all the yelling! Just something I've noticed over the last few days.
I argued with Carolyn the other day, experienced the battle of the century with my Chinese cook and his wife at the fast food restaurant I frequent, and suffered thru a half hour session of a man yelling at the voices in his head, and management at the Airport this morning.
Shhhhhh!
Relax!
Quite Please!

WILLIE AND THE MAD DOG
WILLIE AND THE MAD DOG
Willie (my landlords st bernard) was doing what I affectionately call MAD DOG the other morning and it was funny as hell. I had the day off and after his master and masteress left; he went out exploring the yard. Started to get frisky all by himself and started tearing around the yard in mad dashes, cutting to the left, cutting to the right, running in circles and having a great time all by his lonesome. Then as a grand finally, he pulled a 20 pound bag of peat moss off their bench by the shed and started ripping it apart, took mouth fulls of dirt and spit them out. What a mess he made. I'd of stopped him, but it was just to fun to watch from my kitchen window while I drank my morning coffee. ;)

A Deutsch Honk and Toot ;)
A Deutsch Honk and Toot ;)
OK, I've been riding the Deutsch Bahn trains here in southwestern Germany for 10 months now and I think that I can probably officially say that I've endured 99% of the "Bahn Experiance." Both the trains and the people. Now I don't say this to be mean, or demeaning, or mischievous, but rather just to relay my "general" experience to the world. BUT, come Monday mornings, it is all to evident that the weekends consisted of eating sour kraut, wurst, and gallon upon gallon's of yeast active wheat beer. Monday's the trains seem like an over crowed prison with a over flatulent population. And what's up with the need to blow you nose in a fog horn type fashion? Is this a cultural norm or proud profession of nationality? :) Smile! Ya got to love to live here!!!
Light Heartedly!
